Sex crimes are some of the toughest and complicated charges that can be brought forward. They can encompass everything from misdemeanors, such as indecent exposure, to serious felonies such as rape.

Sex crimes carry the most severe consequences but are routinely prosecuted with the least reliable evidence of any type of crime.  The Orange County sex crimes defense attorneys at Kundani Chang Khinda & Wilson LLP have handled hundreds of jury trials and achieved substantial name recognition across the Orange County area and across Southern California. Our attorneys have not only prosecuted sex crimes cases but one of our partners devoted most of his career as a prosecutor working in the Victim Impact Program, a specialized complex litigation unit that focuses on the vertical prosecution and investigation of domestic violence, rape, child abuse, and sex crime offenses, where he tried numerous felony jury trials to verdict and prevailed. One of his successful jury trials even culminated in a published opinion by the California Appellate Court.

Our attorneys represent clients facing state and federal charges such as:

  • Sexual assault of a minor/statutory rape
  • First, second, third or fourth-degree sexual assault
  • Internet crimes, including solicitation of a minor or looking at child pornography
  • Stalking
  • Child molestation
  • Indecent exposure
  • Lewd and lascivious behavior

Most of these crimes are charged as felonies, which may include mandatory prison time. Additionally, internet crimes could mean federal charges, which will mean time in federal prison if convicted.

Often, if you are convicted of a sex crime offense you will be required to register as a sex offender under Penal Code 290 PC, known as the Sex Offender Registration Act. Having to register as a sex offender can be one of the worst penalties you face if convicted as a sex offender. Being charged with a sex crime can be embarrassing, but being convicted of a sex crime can have serious consequences for the rest of your life. In addition to being required to register as a sex offender every year for the rest of your life your ability to work and live in certain neighborhoods of your choice may be hindered. Finally, if the sex crime is serious enough, you may have to serve a lengthy prison sentence, many of which carry life sentences.

Being required to register as a sex offender is part of a law known as Megan’s Law. Megan’s Law is an informal name for laws in the United States requiring law enforcement authorities to make information available to the public regarding registered sex offenders. Commonly included information is the offender’s name, picture, address, incarceration date, and nature of the crime. The information is often displayed on free public websites.

As a convicted sex offender you may have to register as a sex offender, per Megan’s Law, and have your identification and address posted on the Internet where it can be seen by people throughout the country. Everyone from your employer to your friends and neighbors will know that you have been labeled as an offender, and you will be stigmatized for years to come. Working with an experienced defense attorney can help you avoid some of the harshest repercussions of a sex crime charge.

There are many reasons that children or separated spouses make accusations of sex crimes and an aggressive investigation of past history can discover why they may have made the particular accusation. In these circumstances, it may be done as a strategy to gain a bargaining point against the other spouse and it is only after a thorough, methodical investigation of the claims that they can be demonstrated to be baseless. The Orange County criminal defense attorneys at Kundani Chang Khinda & Wilson LLP have experience helping people engaged in divorce actions, family law disputes, and people in the public eye who are being targeted.

If you have been charged with a sex crime, there are many complicated variables that play a part – you need an attorney who has specialized knowledge in how to deal with such cases.
